Sladen Fault (Cadillac South), Abitibi exposed

Fault surface is almost vertical
platform set for drilling
Looking east

Notice smoothness of fault surface.
The soft volcanics north of the fault have been
eroded prior to ground collapse

Looking at greywacke south of the Sladen
Fault

Ground north of the fault has collapsed revealing
a drift on the first level plus a crosscut above

Looking at the first level of the east Malartic mine.
It has been exposed because the ground north of the
Sladen Fault has collapsed due to mining activities

Preparation for mining. Drilling in greywacke

                                           Crosscut prior to drilling

Massive, blocky greywacke next to Sladen Fault

Mining of greywacke will start from west to east

After first blast. Crosscut still visible on the face

After second blast: Crosscut mined out

Only part of 1st level drift still remains

Face of greywacke after several blasts. Notice foliation parallel to fault

Huge block of greywacke breaks off & slides

Same block of greywacke from another angle

Greywacke breaks off in huge blocks

Part of the greywacke zone mined out

Not much left

Unmineralized greywacke behind ore zone
About 6 m of overburden

Just north of the Sladen Fault.
Lighter porphyry with darker mafic volcanics
